Trapeziectomy surgery is often recommended for those with advanced arthritis at the base of the thumb. Over time, arthritis can lead to cartilage damage within this joint, causing pain and stiffness that affects grip and dexterity. During trapeziectomy surgery, the trapezium bone is carefully removed, eliminating the arthritic joint and reducing bone-on-bone friction. Sometimes, a tendon graft is used to create a cushion in place of the removed bone, providing additional stability and reducing post-surgical stiffness.
